HISTORY

Titanium was first discovered in 1791 by William Gregor in Cornwall, England. He came across the reddish-brown substance while analyzing gun powder. In 1795 Dr. Martin H. Klaproth found titanium in rutile ore, and determined that titanium was an element. Dr. Klaproth named the element Titanium (Ti,atomic number22) after the Titans in Greek mythology.

It took several years and numerous attempts until titanium would be isolated. The first success was made by Lars Nilson and Otto Pettersson in 1887. They were able to isolate the titanium to 95% purity. Henri Moissah was able to produce 98% pure titanium, and then with the help of the General Electric Company in 1910 Matthew A. Hunter was able to isolate titanium to 99.9% purity. At last in 1946 William J. Kroll discovered that by reducing titanium tetrachloride (TiC14) with magnesium, titanium could be produced commercially. The Kroll process is still used for titanium metal production today.

PROPERTIES

The largest quantities of titanium ore are found in Australia, Canada, and North America. Interestingly titanium has also been detected in our sun, stars, and meteorites. Rocks obtained during the Apollo 17 mission showed the presence of titanium oxide (Ti02). Titanium has also been found in the human body, plants and coal ash.

Titanium is known for being strong durable, lightweight, hypoallergenic and exceptionally resistant to corrosion by salt water, gases, acids, alkalis, and microbiological influences. When free of oxygen and nitrogen, titanium will melt at 3020F and boil at 5040F. Pure titanium is nearly as strong as steel and yet 50% lighter.

TITANIUM USES

Titanium is involved in nearly every aspect of our lives. Because of its non-corrosive hypoallergenic properties, titanium is used medically for heart valves, pace makers, dental implants, artificial hips, joints and surgical equipment. Titanium is also used in eyeglass frames, jewelry, sporting equipment, toothpaste and sunscreen.

Titanium’s strength, durability and lightweight properties allow it to be used in commercial aircraft, military aircraft, missiles, tanks, ships, submarines, space shuttles, and the international space station. Aircraft grade titanium is composed of 90% titanium, 6% aluminum, and 4% vanadium and known as Titanium 6.4 (6AL/4V); this grade of titanium is used by Luxurien to manufacture our top quality titanium rings. Don’t settle for anything less.
